Eclipse by Dirk Strasser

Eclipse – The Lost Book of Ascension

Can you see the story breathing?

What happens if the days keep getting shorter?
And shorter?
Until there is an eternal night?

What happens as the darkness grows?
And the creatures of dusk take control of the Mountain?
And the quest for the third Book is the only hope?

The Mountain is in its death throes as the Nazir send their wraiths to finish what the dusk-rats and grale had begun. Soon there will be no daylight to protect the Maelir and Faemir, and with each twilight there are fewer places to hide. Will the Mountain finally collapse under its own instability or will Atreu and Verlinden’s descent find the words of salvation in the Lost Book of Ascension?

Excerpt
Chapter Eight

In the growing dusk the Source took on an increasing dream-like quality.

Atreu became aware of his own breathing, and soon the air around him seemed to be pulsing in time. A soft lap-lapping of water merged with the rhythm of his breaths. After a while he realised that the dark figures on the lake were coming closer. As they approached, he could see that the cowled monks were sitting bolt upright on the floating prayer mats and paddling slowly to shore.

By the time the monks reached the edges of the lake, Atreu was mesmerised by the serene poetry of the scene. Over a hundred Source Holy Men now reached the shore and stood up from their mats in the same fluid motion. Each one remained perfectly still, facing the cliffs with their back to the lake, as the others arrived at the shore. Finally the last one arrived, and Atreu waited, expecting something to happen. He could detect no signal or sign, but as one, the monks gave out a deep sonorous tone that filled the air like honey. As he listened, the tone grew deeper and sweeter. It so enveloped him that he could not be sure that his own voice had not joined in the twilight chorus.

And when he thought no sound could be richer, he became aware that the monks by the lake had been joined by the monks in the cliffs behind him, and the chorus seemed to reach a height and depth he had never imagined. He had been moved by Felsen chanting before, but what he was hearing now was on another plane. No pictures or visions ran through his head. This was pure sound, devoid of any content or images. It was as if his head was being cleared, and filled with a single resonant note.

The cliffs, the water, the air itself, seemed to become one with the tone, adding to its depth and flavour. And then, just as Atreu lost any sense of a world that wasn’t made of the sound, it faded, the last note lingering like the sweetest of aftertastes.

“Well? Are you going to take me to her or not?” Cora asked, getting frustrated as she cocked her hip out in annoyance.
“What’s your plan if I say no?” Rogan looked at his watch casually, which only irritated Cora more.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
Rogan shrugged nonchalantly in response, neither denying nor confirming her comment.
“You believe what you choose to believe.”
Before Cora could think it through, she snapped. Her fist went flying towards Rogan’s face quicker than she expected and she could do nothing to retract it.
Rogan lifted his arm to block her a split-second before the punch was about to land. Deflecting her blow, he diverted her fist to the side and using the momentum she had built up he gripped her wrist, spinning her around and pinning it behind her back. Leaning on the space between her shoulder blades, he shoved her body against the door, his six foot three frame towering over her.
“Don’t you ever try something like that again,” he said, his tone lowering to a dangerous level, his head close to hers.
“Why not? What are you going to do? It’s not like you can afford to lose me so I don’t have to worry about being disposed of like normal employees,” Cora shot back, trying to act more confident than she felt which wasn’t easy when she could smell the wood her face was pressed against.
There was a controlled power to the grip he had around her wrist. She could sense that he would only have to make a slight adjustment to his hold to be able to snap it like a twig.
“You may be of more use to me than the others but that doesn’t mean you’re untouchable. I only need you coherent and that leaves a lot of options, regarding pain, open to me. It’s in your best interest not to test me.”

She deposited a small pink Victoria’s Secret bag in my lap. “I ran out of wrapping paper so I had to regift in a used bag but I figured if this kept Clyde and me from getting burned in the kitchen, why not give them to you.” She smiled. “Anyway, this is more protective.”

Way too much information. I tore at the hot pink tissue, dug to the bottom, and plucked out the most hideous brown oven mitts I had ever seen. I looked up, annoyed. “I can’t wear these. They’re . . . they’re. . . .”

“Say it.”

“Butt ugly.”

“Then start a trend.”

“Where? The zoo?”

“The mitts are thermal lined in case dowsing burns your fingertips. It’s a safety precaution.” She stepped on the brake and we jerked forward. “You can’t afford to screw this up, girlfriend. Wear them when you feel the urge.”

“You’re giving me mixed messages. I have a lot of urges and none of them require oven mitts. Seriously. You know how humiliating this is for me? Now you want me to advertise my quirk with torch-blower gloves? Why not throw rotten tomatoes at me in a bell tower? Or send me to massage school where at least I’ll be admired for my vibrating hands.” Disgusted, I tossed the mitts at my feet.

Release Date: 01/19/15

Summary from Goodreads:
Don't just fight the system…burn it.

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn't a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

Valmont helped clean the mess from dinner. “Need anything else before I go?”

“No. Thanks for coming to check on me.”

“If I could, I’d camp outside your door just to make sure you were safe.” He sighed. “Knowing you could’ve been hurt eats away at me. And yes, I know it sounds like I’m obsessed, but since I became your knight, you’re my number one focus. I tried asking around for advice, but there hasn’t been a citizen of Dragon’s Bluff who’s stepped forth to protect a dragon in more than a century.”

“Why did you intervene that day?”

He clasped her right hand between his and stared at her like she was the most beautiful creature in the world. “There’s something about you, something special, something worth fighting for.”

Wow. If there ever was a perfect thing for a guy to say, that was it.

About the Author
I have always been drawn to story telling. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t telling a story in my head or on paper. In grade school, we had journal writing time which I turned into story telling time, weaving tales of magic and adventure that mimicked the fairy tales and myths that I loved to read. It was there, with the help of two very special teachers, that I nurtured this love and started my journey as a writer.

I write fantasy, paranormal romance, and everything in between, seasoned with a good dash of adventure and mystery. Join me on my tales of magic, adventure, and romance.

The room was dim, but clear, dark splashes of blood stained the pale plaster walls. Bloody speckles crept high, close to the ceiling. Spray from a major artery while the heart was pumping with panic. There was so much of it, as if Allette had painted all four walls with it like a manic artist.

Ward’s gaze slid to the table. More blood. Then lower.

Bile burned his throat. He knew what he’d see. All that blood. It couldn’t be from just one body.

His gaze landed on a dismembered arm first. It was so small that the hand, if curled into a fist, could have easily hidden in one of his.

His throat tightened and the bile rose higher. His pulse roared and panic clawed at his chest. This was his fault. He’d seen a corpse before. Many actually. He’d even dug a few from their graves to perform necropsies and further his illegal studies in medicine, but he’d never seen such carnage before and he couldn’t dissociate from these victims like he could with the necropsies. Father, mother, half a dozen children, all murdered. Their blood, with the precious soul magic Allette needed to survive, slicked the floor, pooled in uneven spots on the hard-packed dirt, and splattered the furniture.

He couldn’t catch his breath. “I did this.”

Celia grabbed the back of his shirt and jerked him from the doorway. He stumbled, his heel catching on a rock, and she shoved him against the wall outside the house.

“This is not your fault.”

“I knew she was a monster and I set her free.” His stomach heaved, and tears burned his eyes with the effort not to throw up. All that blood was on his hands.
