On The Page With . . . Sarah England
Hello, Sarah, welcome to On the page with . . . Make yourself comfortable and have a cupcake.
Share a bit about you:
I originally trained as a nurse back in the dark ages when there was no anaesthetic and we gave the patients gin and something to bite down on. I then became a medical rep, specialising in mental health, which came in handy with a family like mine. On reaching the crisis age of 40 I flung it all aside to become a poverty-stricken writer, which is what I’ve been doing for many years now. I live in Dorset with my dog Harry. Oh and my husband.
He's a springer spaniel, whose mission in life is to play Frisbee all day long – here he is!
I have read both 'Expected' and '3am and Wide Awake', both of which are completely different from each other and such great reads! Tell us about what you write and how long you've been writing for:
I have around 150 short stories and two serials published to date – mostly in women’s magazines, but also several anthologies and newspapers. Then this year I had a collection of thrillers –‘3am and Wide Awake’ published with Alfie Dog Ltd; and a comedy novel – ‘Expected’ published with Crooked Cat. I’m currently working on a supernatural thriller, and there will also be a sequel to ‘Expected’ and another serial - that’s the plan!
I’ve always wanted to be a writer and have never been without a book to read. But I’ve been writing seriously for about 8 years now.
Sounds like you are very busy! Do you have a favourite drink to sup when you're writing?
I drink so much coffee it’s no surprise I’m wired up all night with my brain racing along, and then need more coffee throughout the day to keep awake!
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a supernatural horror novel. It’s extremely frightening and the research books had to be put in another room in a box because I couldn’t look at the covers. I don’t know why I do it to myself – but this story has to be told…. Shriek!
Oooohhh, I look forward to reading it! What are you reading at the moment?
I have just finished ‘Kaelia Awakening’ by Gina Dickerson (!) and just started ‘Younger, Thinner, Blonder,’ by Sue Watson – a great antidote to the horror novel writing!
Thanks for reading 'Mortiswood: Kaelia Awakening'! Let's talk about something non-writer related, do you have any hobbies or passions etc.?
I have a terrible affliction called online shopping compulsive disorder. I order masses of stuff and fill my online baskets. The items arrive and then I send them all back again.
As bad as me with shoes . . . except I don't send them back. Share a bit about your most recently released book:
‘Expected’ stars Sam Sweet - a failed psychiatric nurse from a sink estate in Weston Super mare. Her mother, whose husband ran off with another woman 20 years ago, has only one ambition and that is to be a grandmother.
But Sam is terrified of giving birth. She’s easily traumatised and has no ambition to return to the estate and have dozens of children. She just wants a chance to have a career and ,maybe fall in love.
Alas, in a drunken stupor she meets Simon - the psychopathic surgeon, who promises her a wonderful life and she believes him - because she is a dingbat and has a lot to learn.
But now she's trapped and can't get out of the situation - her latest job is injecting facial fillers and clients are suing because it's going lumpy; her best friend, also her boss, is sexually jealous to the point of blind rage because her boyfriend fancies Sam and does little to hide the fact. Living with her psychopathic boyfriend and with her job on the line she now has nowhere to go!
However, Sam's coping strategy is to eat more chocolate and shop like a WAG on speed. Soon she piles on weight and sinks deeply into debt, at which point Simon the surgeon starts playing serious mind games; and by the time it dawns on Sam just what a horrific mess she's in - we might as well pass her the JCB because she keeps on digging.
As she hits rock bottom, however, her dream man arrives – American Joel Madison - but Sam now feels too fat to pursue matters.... and slimy Simon ups the stakes when he sniffs out her potential happiness and escape. Although that's nothing compared to the cards her mother decides to play... it's getting worse.......and the wedding to Simon is still booked....
Can you offer any nugget of advice for aspiring writers?
